De-rating 60kW or 200kW and certification of your wind turbines offered?

The question of whether our wind turbines offered can have a de-rating to 60kW or 200kW job done with certification is being asked by many of our customers who are looking to buy a larger turbine with higher towers and bigger rotor diameters than their original 60kw or 200kW counterpart.

and wish to have the generator output reduced and limited to either 60kW or 200kW max. in order to still qualify for higher FITs (Feed-In Tariffs) for this class.

The answer is yes and no and completely depends on the make and model of the turbine you are looking to purchase. As a rule of thumb, most machines can be reduced and limited to max. the output of let's say 60kW or 200kW if the turbine you are interested in is rated not more than 30% -40% of the output you are looking for and can be achieved by adjusting the blades (for stall machines) or the pitch control settings on the controller for pitch regulated turbines.

However, this does not assure that this method of limitation will qualify with your local grid provider for the higher FITs (Feed-in Tariffs) as the turbine certifications still remain original. Please check with your local grid provider if they would accept this method of limitation.

The easiest solution to de-rating 60kW or 200kW output of the turbine you may be interested in is after dismantling of wind turbines to replace the existing generator with a lower-rated generator if the original manufacturer also produced a lower-rated version of the model you are interested in.

We had been informed that there are a number of refurbishers who are able to replace and fit a new generator plate showing a lower-rated max. output for qualification purposes and can also issue a certification if required.
