First, the major components of a windmill. It won’t take much time to familiarise yourself with these key components and some of them may be already known to you.

Anemometer. It is basically a speedometer for the windmill. It is a gauge to read how fast the blades are rotating. The most sophisticated systems have a feedback route to a control computer regulating the blades’ speed so that damage won’t occur at high-speed winds.

Blades. Most turbines have a minimum of two blades, very similar to that of an airplane propeller. Standard windmills have more than two blades. When wind impacts the blades, it causes a ‘lift’ which will make the windmill rotate.

Brake. Most commercial or industrial windmills have a brake system. The brake is used to stop the windmill in an emergency.

Controller. Again. Most commercial and industrial wind turbines are computer program-controlled. One function of the control program is to start and stop the wind turbine. Wind speeds of less than 3mph per hour usually don’t generate any electricity and wind greater than 50mph can cause damage to the windmill. The computer program will regulate the windmill operating between these wind speed ranges.

Gear Box. Larger windmills or wind turbine systems have gearboxes, usually to increase the shaft speed from 55 rpm to a maximum of approx. 1800 rpm (revolutions per minute). There are also ‘gearless’ wind turbines that have a lower failure rate and are known as ‘direct drive’ systems.

Generator. This is the part that actually generates electricity. Similar to an alternator (or generator) in your car, the generator makes the electricity.

Nacelle. This is the definition for the cover or caging that protects the generator and gearbox if any.

Pitch. Pitch is the ‘tilt’ of the windmill blades also explained as the angle that the blades are at to “capture” the wind so the generator will rotate. Too much pitch can make the generator turn too fast and damage the windmill and too little pitch will disable the generator to rotate.

Rotor. The rotor is attached to the generator shaft and holds the blades and hub.

Tower. The tower can be made of wood or strong PVC pipes on smaller windmills and is usually made of steel or aluminum on larger units. This is what holds the windmill up into the airflow.

Wind Vane. This is the tail that helps keep the windmill pointed into the wind. The Wind Vane is very important for maximum power generation.

While this list shows only the basic parts and is far from everything you’ll find on an electricity-producing windmill, at least you will now have an idea you’re your windmill repair service or parts supplier is talking about.
