Google Contest recognises Jellyfish Wind Turbine Invention

High hopes for a Seattle man

Will his Jellyfish wind turbine receive worldwide support from Google users?

A Seattle inventor named Chad Maglaque decided to enter his wind turbine invention in Google’s “Project 10 to the 100th” contest and this got people talking. To celebrate the company’s 10th birthday, Google campaigns a contest, which will award $10 million to develop five innovative ideas that aim to change the world. The objective is to help as many people as possible.

Google has received over 100,000 entries and is filtering the field down to 100 before releasing a campaign for a public vote for the Google selected top 20 entries sometime in March this year. After the vote, Google will decide which 5 will win the competition.

Entrants must submit a video to YouTube to share their idea to Google and Mr Magluage’s ‘Jellyfish’ wind turbine has gotten noticed. Chad says that his idea is just “a very simple idea which brings together several ‘everyday parts’ and makes it into a residential wind power generator”. The turbine is only 3 foot high and can be mounted onto any rooftop and the difference to other small scale wind turbines, the Jellyfish wind turbine can be plugged directly into a standard residential household electrical socket making it extremely user-friendly. The turbine is controlled by a variable-speed motor which creates a current that is compatible with the grid. The electricity produced by the Jellyfish can be used in the home or fed back to the grid. ‘Many of my competitor’s residential micro wind turbine systems are just not practical’ Mr Magluage says, while he refers to the usual expense and inspections required for onsite turbine installations. ‘You should be able to drive down to your local DIY shop and pick your residential windmill of the shelf, put it into your truck, drive home and have it up and running within the hour.
