The Greenbird – A New Wind Powered Car

A totally new and record-breaking wind-powered car has emerged. A carbon fibre composite vehicle named The Greenbird is powered by nothing else but wind.

The world land speed record for wind-powered vehicles has been broken by a British engineer with this new groundbreaking “Greenbird” gimmick. The engineer achieved exactly 126.1 mph which is 202.9 km with his wind-powered Greenbird car which is due to be tested on the dry plains in Nevada, USA shortly. The Greenbird wind-powered car weighs just under 600kg when not in operation which means that it is easy to add weight for over a tonne at speed due to the wings effect.

The shape of the wind-powered car and its wings produces upward lift at high speeds which jeopardizes the car’s safety and in order to this, the designers have applied a simple but yet effective idea taken from standard Formula 1 cars by installing small side wings to increase the car’s downforce and traction with the ground.

There is hardly any metalwork to be found on this amazing new renewable energy car and the only metalwork used was to create the wing bearings as well as the wheel unit. “A sailboat with very high performance” is probably the best description and it does look indeed very similar to a sailboat but it is equipped with wings instead of sail and using a wind power system. The wings, of course, are used to generate the necessary movement by means of wind power. An amazing machine of which we will certainly hear much more about in future.
