The Nonsense Spouted About Wind Turbines….

Britain, at the forefront of wind technology and innovation, is being dragged back by some MPs and “news”papers such as the Daily Telegraph, at the forefront of the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) and head-in-the-sand no global warming preaching. It would be funny if it wasn’t so overtly pro-fossil fuel and ignorant of the facts. Let me explain.

Wind farms knock as much as one third off the value of nearby homes, an MP has claimed.

Geoffrey Cox, Conservative MP for West Devon and Torridge, in the South West of England has reported that his constituents had been told by estate agents that their homes were worth “significantly less” due to turbines being built in the vicinity and that it was an “injustice” that they lose out while developers and land owners potentially pocket “millions”.

Renewable UK, which represents the British wind industry, denied the claims, insisting that house prices are not affected by wind farms. A spokesman for them said:

“The wind industry doesn’t accept that there is any reliable independent academic evidence to suggest that wind farms have any effect on house prices. The most recent study was done by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and that study was inconclusive. The Royal Institute now says there is no definitive answer to this question.”

And let us not forget that the amount paid to those living near to turbines get paid a sum each year. Last year the amount increased from £1,000 a year for every megawatt (MW) of wind power capacity, to £5,000 a year. That’s a princely sum… not mentioned by the newspaper report or the Member of Parliament. A typical turbine might have a 2MW capacity, meaning a community near a 12-turbine wind farm could receive £120,000 a year.

Some of us would have no issue with living near a wind farm, gaining peace and tranquility from seeing the blades rotating and knowing that green energy is being produced. Rather than then live next to a nuclear reactor or coal-burning power station!
