Vestas Deal for Oakfield Wind Farm, Maine

Vestas Wind Systems have won a 148-megawatt order from First Wind Holdings Inc. in Maine. This is the Danish manufacturer’s fourth project with this U.S. developer. The order is for 48 V112 3-megawatt wind turbines, which are rated at just over 3 megawatts each. It’s the second stage for Vestas, under a wider 718-megawatt agreement with First Wind announced last December, after the first 150-megawatt deal. Today’s order also includes a 10-year service plan.

The turbines are due for delivery to First Wind’s Oakfield project in the second quarter of 2015, with commissioning taking place in the last quarter of next year. It shows that First wind have been pleased with the performance of Vestas’ turbines at their other sites.

First Wind CEO Paul Gaynor (pictured below)  said that the company will continue the construction of the Oakfield Wind project and look forward to installing Vestas’ V112-3.0 MW turbines at the wind project. He said:

“The Vestas turbines at our Bull Hill project in Maine and the Palouse project in Washington State have performed well and we expect the Oakfield project to enjoy similar success.”

Vestas also had a comment. Their US and Canada sales and service division president Chris Brown said:

“The first project in Maine has achieved 99 percent availability since it was commissioned in 2012, a testament to the performance of our technology and service capabilities that customers expect from Vestas.

The Oakfield wind project will include the Vestas 10-year Active Output Management (AOM) 5000 service agreement.

The Oakfield wind farm will be located approximately 2.5 miles from the center of Oakfield, helping the community harvest and utilize the area’s abundant wind resource.

It has been predicted that his is likely to be a continuing relationship between Vestas and First Wind as they are both now trusted partners in wind developments. Watch this space for more Vestas/First Wind collaborations!
